Part Six

Sol was so eager to finish his story he skipped the Sun Salutations and leapt right onto the pillow next to Irma’s ear. She was still sleeping of course, so when he bellowed “Helloooo” into it, she jumped with a squeal. “Oh my God Sol, I was in the middle of a really good dream,” she groaned and turned to go back to sleep.

“Can’t be as good as the rest of my story Irma, it’s now or never. I don’t usually give up this much information to a human. But I was beginning to feel I could trust you.”

Irma was guilted into sitting up and paying attention. “I’m sorry Sol, do go on, I want to know what happened next.”

“Ok so there I was living at the Magic Castle. This place was really something bustling with all kinds of Hollywood elites. Cary Grant, Orson Welles, they were just a few of many who used the secret password to get through the magic door. I was really enjoying the high end tuna and velvet cushion routine. Then one day the boys, Irene’s Husband and brother-in-law, they decided to put me in the act. I think the Rabbit had gone on strike. I heard Bill shout to Milt “I’ll bet you my Mickey Mantel playing card you can’t make the cat disappear. Next thing I know I’m up on the Magic table in this big ornate box. I hear a few taps of the wand and some mumbo jumbo spoken and then I see through the cracks a plume of glitter in the air. After that, I must have blacked out, because I did not feel a thing. I just remember the box landing softly on sand in a very vast and silent place. And I’m just sitting there thinking, “Where have they all gone?”

The Magic Room where Sol disappeared never to return…

Part Seven

“I must have sat in that box for days, I kept coming in and out of consciousness it was very hot and I was dehydrated and hallucinating quite a bit. Finally there was a tremendous sirocco and that wind blew me fiercely across the dessert until the wooden box bashed up against a large stone and split into pieces. I was unharmed and when I looked up I could see that I had smashed right into the Great Sphinx! “

Irma gasped, “Wow what are the chances?”
“Well chances are this was not the modern day Sphinx, but the Sphinx in the time of it’s construction. So not only had Milt made me disappear he had sent me back in time as well. I will never know how that two bit magician did it, but he did.”

“Amazing, now I really have a lot of questions.”
“Save your list until the end My Dear,” Sol continued, “I thought I was all alone out there in that dismal place with limestone and residue blowing about. When suddenly a parading palanquin hoisted by slaves and carrying the Pharaoh appeared in the distance.

“A Palanquin?” Irma was not familiar with that word.
“Yes a traditional wheel-less carriage used for Royals.”

“Oh yes, like the kind Cleopatra rode on.”
“Oh don’t get me started on Cleopatra that is another long story,” Sol rolled his little cat eyes.

“So here comes the Pharaoh Khafre to check on his little project and he finds me and my crazy smashed box at the feet of the Sphinx. Well you can imagine the uproar. Fortunately for me, Cats are highly worshiped in Egypt and especially us unusual felines with crazy materials and magical etchings all around them. I was terrified as the slaves approached speaking a language I could not understand. But it was soon I discovered that the Pharaoh announced that I was the living Spirit of the Sphinx and must return with them to the Palace to be looked after and served. And so began my years in Egypt…”

A slight snore could be heard.

“Irma? Irma? Blast woman asleep again?” Sol shook his head and curled up beside her for another long cat nap
