Irma woke slowly thinking perhaps the entire cat business had been a dream, then she peeled one eye open to see in the sunbeam across her bed, a familiar lump of orange and cream soaking it all up.

“Oh so you are real? And you are still here. Hmm, well today begins the search for your human. I don’t want someone out there frantically looking for you.”

The Cat squinted over in her direction then began a long intense yawn, a yawn ending in a low deep flow of consonants and vowels forming a clearly audible British accent.

“You know Irma that won’t be at all necessary. I have no Mum. I have no human master, I have no ties that bind me. So save yourself the trouble and just enjoy the pleasure of my company.” The Cat sat up and stretched his way to the end of the bed, taking in the morning light as if it were his sustenance. Then slowly he placed his furry little paws on the foot board and began to salute the sun in perfect Yogi form. “You see Irma it’s a long story how I came to you here, how I, a cat, am speaking to you now.”

Irma was speechless, she had a million questions but they all just hung there beyond her gaping mouth.

“Would you please be a dear and put a record on. I love music in the mornings.” Seeing that Irma did indeed have a record player in the bedroom and a vast collection of vintage music. The cat had been dying to hear something.

Irma did his bidding, how could she not? She chose Al Stewart’s Year of the Cat to accompany his Sun Salutations. And she sat there and watched this unfathomable creature take it all in.

Nearly six minutes later it appeared the Cat’s yoga session was finished, “The song is over.” he informed her.

Irma took the needle from the record and turned to the cat, “Just how exactly do you know my name? Wait, no just exactly how is all of this actually happening right now? You need to tell me everything.” Irma plopped back down on the bed and made herself a captive audience.

“Well nine, no ten lives ago I was just an ordinary house cat. But as fate and destiny came into play I passed between many masters and many lifetimes from West Hollywood to the West Bank of the Nile I have made a name for myself. And the last name given to me, by the Great Sphinx of Egypt was Sol. Sol for the Sun. Sol for life. Sol for light. And somehow when I was bestowed the tenth life, a life I was never meant to have. I was also given a voice, albeit conditional,” he looked back up to the Sun and continued, “The Great Sphinx granted me a voice from sunrise until noon. I live half the day with this amazing gift, only to loose it the other half.”

“I see,” said Irma “fascinating. Well then you best tell me as much as you can before lunch, beginning with my name.”

“How do I know your name? Well I have been hanging around this neighborhood a week now listening long and hard trying to discover just who I could open up to next. By summation of your neighbors, you my dear are the craziest girl on the block. So naturally I thought I might be welcome here.”

“Naturally.” Irma’s eyes widened and she couldn’t help but smile.

“Well Sol,” Irma held out her hand to Sol’s paw, and shook it, “Welcome to my crazy home.”
