The cat lay still, quiet and completely asleep, leaving Irma in a state of shock and confusion. She stared from across the room, in awe at the cat. Questioning herself under her breath, “I thought I heard you speak” she shook her head, “Am I crazy? Hallucinating? Could these be side effects of my new sleep medication?”

Talking to herself was a common habit these days. But now she was worried would this creature begin to talk back?

“Maybe it was the whispering wind or a ghost?” Irma shrugged examining the cat with one last glance as she headed back to the kitchen to finish the dishes and resume her normal life.

A few hours had passed the kitchen was sparkling clean, even the oven was now a shiny showcase for the pot roast Irma was beginning to prepare for dinner. Busying herself and staying out of the living room was calming her of her fright.
She could not face going insane just yet. No not today.

Just then the cat sauntered in swishing his tail, leaping up to the freshly clean counter top and hoisting himself in one swift jump to the top of the curtain over the kitchen sink. As agile as a gymnast he used the curtain rod as his balance beam.

“Nice to see you awake Cat. But do you mind getting down from there, I keep a tidy house here and don’t want to risk anything breaking or tumbling out of place.”

The cat leapt from the curtain rod to the top of the avocado green Frigidaire and perched to lick his paw.

“Hmm Cat got your tongue?” Irma snickered at her own joke. It seemed the fluffy tabby had gone silent on her.

The cat just resumed doing average cat like things, sticking closely to Irma as she continued to make her Sunday dinner.

Irma was not so pleased to see the chubby little bugger settling in on her favorite tea towel for a late afternoon cat nap. “What am I going to do with you? If you were not so cute and possibly the only talking cat in the universe I might just toss you out the window right now.”

The cat slowly opened one eye and glared up at her, as if he heard that. Then he sneezed and resumed his second nap of the day.
