As one who is surrounded by creeks and reservoirs it is tough to think of my nearest river. When I was a kid my Grandpa use to take regular fishing trips up to the Feather River. He loved that place and always brought home plenty of salmon or trout for Grandma to cook up for dinner.

Yet, I was never a great fisherman like him, so my favorite river has to be the Big Sur River. That is where I have had many a Best Day Ever.

Just sitting on the bent willow chairs in the actual river, feet dangling in the water atop the smooth rocks, quietly listening to the sounds of Blue Jays squawking and squirrels chattering.

It’s in that river I can let go and be still. I can quiet my mind for dreams and visions to come through. I have actually taken a journal and pen out to those chairs and sat for hours writing. I have also built cairns with the large stones and felt the balance and flow of nature moving through me from the earth and water. A sacred soothing that brings me back to who I really am.

One night while meditating on that river, I heard the distant howl of a coyote, with the crickets and frogs chiming in like a symphony. I took photos in the dark, only to see orbs lit brightly along the riverbank. I know that river is the entrance to some Holy place, a watery path to an otherworldly portal perhaps.

Big Sur, a magical vortex where the river divides the Mountains from the Ocean offering a thin veil to see the possibilities of a truer existence, an existence of peace and harmony.
