Hollywood Nights By Christine Wichman c. July 23, 2017
Sweet hermosa with a hint of smoke,
top down, winding through those Hollywood Hills to the peak,
toward something dark and sinister, something shockingly bleak.
“Follow your own star,” Mama said, and now her star shone bright
for all to see and worship in this city of night, city at night.
She looked down from Mulholland watching the lights sparkle and fade…
“Even after the glitter fades,” she smiled, “I still have it made.”
He took her by the wrist and led her back to the Rolls, back to the hills,
back to his palace under and over the stars.
Neon lights and an endless pour, they laughed and drank until the bright
sun rose.
But like all the rest, he comes and goes.
She cried and sighed, and sighed some more, alone in his bed,
sky for a light, silk pillow for her head.
Bruises on her wrist, blood on her knees,
dressing quickly, she takes his keys…
Winding down the dry bright hills to a thickness
and a stench, streets of stained cement.
Lost souls staring her down, in this dirty part of town,
She hands over a pile of bills, for a bag of thrills
and drives on and on until she finds an edge somewhere
over the ocean.
Her eyes filling with emotion, she presses the gas
until she has wings that surpass everything mundane
or remotely insane…
Fly high LA Woman, tiny dancer, lost angel… you don’t have to stay
after the glitter fades.
