World of Wonder by Christine Wichman c.August 2014
Hef and Hugh had been waiting all year for this, their first ever visit to San Diego’s Comic Con. The twin brothers were avid fans of opposing comics. Hef collected anything and everything to do with Marvel comics, while Hugh had an affinity for all things D.C.
Fortunately their two girlfriends knew what they signed up for and were on board to join them for this Mecca of geek fests. Hef and C.C. were dressed as Alex Warlock and Gamora, while Hugh talked Kaye into painting herself green and going as the Jade to his Kyle Rayner.
“You know it’s suppose to be 81 degrees today Kaye, you might want to just wear the body paint and lose the clothes.” Hugh had a hopeful grin.
“Ha ha, nice try. I am sure there will be plenty of skanky costumes in there for you to ogle. I’m going for an artsy look, which includes clothes, besides, I’m sure they have the AC going.”
“Foiled again ey?” chimed Hef. “I can’t believe C.C was down for wearing this number.” Hef spun his petite and giggly girlfriend around on his finger showing off her black fishnet bodysuit and leather waist corset. “You look so money baby!”
“Very nice.” beamed Hugh. “You two might actually have a shot at the costume contest.”
“I cannot believe we could not bring our cell phones,” C.C was irritated.
“Would ruin the continuity of our characters.” Hef stated.
Kaye just shook her head and continued fanning herself with Hugh’s “Vintage 1953 BATMAN #79”. Hugh snatched it out of her hand and chastised her for folding the pristine pages. “Hey I’m getting that autographed! Here, use this.” he handed her the four day Comic con schedule as a substitute.
Kaye rolled her eyes and broke free of the enormously long line, “I can’t take this waiting anymore, I’m going to find a cigarette.”
“Cancer kills,” Hugh called after her.
She flipped him the bird and carried on down the line to bum a ciggy.
“I need to pee.” whined C.C. “Where are the toilets?”
“I think we passed some porta potties back there somewhere.” Hef was engrossed in the cleavage of a Wonder Woman passing on his left.
C.C. gave him a glare and huffed off. “I’m going to Sonic, I don’t do porta potties.”
“Man, did you see that Wonder Woman?”
Hugh glanced around to be sure Kaye was not returning. “Wonder Woman’s got nothing on that Princess Leia over there.”
“Maybe we should have left the girls at home, who knew there would be so much eye candy.”
“Single ladies everywhere and true geeks as the competition, we definitely did not think this through.”
“No. We did not.” laughed Hugh.
The line was now picking up speed and the boys were making use of their alone time by chatting up a horde of Justice League Girls.
Meanwhile, Kaye had finally found someone who smoked and was chatting up a kind Cyborg and his buddy Thanos.
C.C. was having difficulty finding an available restroom and was about to settle for the dreaded porta potty when her ex boyfriend, Henry approached her from behind with a frantic hug, that caught her by surprise.
“C.C.? WOW you look amazing!”
“Hey Henry,” C.C. rose on her tip toes to give him a kiss hello.
They began to chat and catch up.
Hugh and Hef were beginning to move closer to the entrance.
“Where are they? I have Kaye’s ticket, I can’t go in if she doesn’t get back here.” Hugh searched down the line for a sign of her.
“Well, now I have to pee. I will go and look for C.C. don’t go in without me dude.”
“You better hurry then, we’re getting close. And if you see Kaye, give her this.” he handed off the ticket, “I really don’t want to miss the autograph session. Tell her she can take her time then meet me in there..”
“Ok I’ll find ’em. We should never have split up, someone always gets lost.”
Hef made his way toward Sonic, checking the line for Kaye along the way. Deciding to stop at the porta potties first, due to dire need, he caught sight of his C.C. giggling and flirting with her ex. He made his way over to interupt the love fest and claim his woman.
Hugh was only 10 people away from the entrance now and worried everyone had gone missing and he would have to ditch them all and go in alone.
Just then Kaye sidled up to him, “Hey.”
“Great you’re back.”
“Where’s your brother and C.C?”
“They’re not with you?”
“No. Why would they be?”
“I gave Hef your ticket, he went to go look for you and C.C.”
“Well that was dumb.”
“Yeah, especially since we are going in now.”
“You were gonna go in without me?”
“Well…you could catch up with me inside.”
Kaye shot Hugh a look that said it all.
“Fine, let’s go find them and get in the back of the line then.”
“Seriously? I am not waiting all over again. You stay here and keep our spot, I’ll go find them.”
Kaye made her way back down the line toward the porta potties.
Hef and Henry were in a full blown scuffle, capes were flying and security was approaching to break up the fight.
Kaye saw the cops moving toward them and rushed in to warn them, getting caught up in the line of Henry’s strongest punch. Kaye was flat on the ground and angry. She rose up swinging, and ended up punching one of the cops. Before they knew it, the three of them were in handcuffs and being escorted into a Police SUV.
C.C. insisted on going with them down to the station, and climbed into the passenger seat while everyone was talking at once, trying to explain their way out of the situation.
20 minutes later, Hugh had let everyone in the line go ahead of him until there was no one left in line. Still no sign of his brother or the girls. With no cell phone he had no idea where they disappeared to, and had no choice but to resign himself to a bench just outside the entrance.
He sat on the bench, frustrated that the day he looked so forward to, was ending up such a bust. His world of wonder, turned to a world of blunder.
